The Design - Energy Use
Housing accounts for about a third of all energy use in the U.K. with nearly two thirds of that being for space heating. With enough insulation it is possible to more or less do away with the need for space heating and significantly reduce energy needs. A lot of energy also goes into the materials used to build a house .
I decided to try and use waste materials and try to avoid cement wherever possible. Where I couldn't use waste materials I planned to use low impact materials like wood (trees absorb carbon dioxide while growing and lock it away, helping to offset the embodied energy).
I started thinking about ways to use minimally-processed materials instead of highly-finished ones.
